We’ll begin with a wood artisan experience where you can handmake your very own traditional souvenir. For the main event, we’ll visit Toshogu Shrine, an incredibly detailed and colourful shrine that looks very different from most shrines in Japan. It is a historic memorial to the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and beautifully nestled among Nikko’s stunning mountains.

After exploring the shrine, we’ll head to Kegon Falls, a massive waterfall with a manmade elevator to take you to the waterfall base. Before heading back to Tokyo, we’ll stop by Lake Chuzenji to relax and reflect on the day.

For lunch, you’ll take part in a hoto noodle-making experience in a local chef’s home. This is a prefecture speciality dish, with hand-cut noodles served in a broth made of local vegetables. Zen and Wellness Japan Tour FAQs

Is this a religious tour? Do I need to be a Buddhist to join?

Not at all. This tour is about experiencing the spiritual and mindful side of Japanese culture, regardless of your personal beliefs. It’s for anyone interested in mindfulness, nature, and traditional practices. You don’t need any prior knowledge of Zen or Buddhism, and all meditation sessions are guided and suitable for complete beginners.

What is the temple lodging (shukubo) in Koyasan like?

Staying in a temple is a deeply memorable and authentic experience. The rooms are traditional Japanese style with tatami mat floors and comfortable futon bedding. While the lodging is simpler than a hotel, it is clean and peaceful. Bathroom facilities are typically shared, though very well-maintained. It’s a chance to disconnect and experience the daily life of Buddhist monks.

What kind of food is served at the temple in Koyasan?

You will be served traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, known as shojin ryori. The meals are artfully prepared, healthy, and delicious, made entirely from vegetables, tofu, and wild plants, avoiding strong flavours like garlic or onion. It is a core part of the temple stay experience.

The itinerary mentions an Aokigahara Forest walk. Isn't that the "suicide forest"?

While the forest has an unfortunate reputation, our visit focuses on its true nature: it is a stunningly beautiful and unique natural environment. We will walk along peaceful, designated nature trails through the sea of trees that grew on old volcanic lava flows. It is a serene and beautiful experience, not a morbid one.

How physically demanding is this tour?

This tour involves a moderate amount of walking at a relaxed pace. You should be comfortable on your feet for walks through large temple complexes like Nikko, the vast Okunoin Cemetery in Koyasan, and the hills of Arashiyama. There are many opportunities for quiet rest and reflection built into the itinerary.
