Pavement & Peaks: Active Tour of Japan FAQs
How fit do I need to be for this trip?
This tour is designed for people with a good baseline level of fitness who enjoy activities like running and hiking. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you should be comfortable running 5-10km and hiking on varied terrain with hills. The pace is always relaxed and focused on enjoyment, not speed.
What are the trails in Hakone and Nara like?
The trails are a mix of well-maintained forest paths, historic stone paving on the Old Tokaido Road, and mountain tracks with some ascents and descents. The Mt. Kintoki loop, for example, involves a steady climb to the summit. They are beautiful and rewarding routes, but you should be prepared for uneven ground and hills.
What should I expect from the weather in May?
May is one of the best months for being active in Japan. The weather is typically warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 15-24°C (60-75°F). It’s generally very pleasant for running and hiking, though it’s always wise to be prepared for some spring showers.
What kind of shoes and gear should I pack?
We highly recommend packing a pair of trail running shoes, as they provide the best grip and support for the varied terrain. In addition to regular running clothes (shorts, tops, etc.), you should bring layers, including a light waterproof jacket, as mountain weather can change quickly.
