“Shaye was awesome! It was so helpful having someone to take us around to different spots in Kyoto. It saved us so much time and allowed us to get more background on the locations. Shaye and I also traded skin care tips and I left Japan with several of her product recommendations.”

Ideas for Your Private Tokyo Itinerary

Every private Tokyo tour is designed around you. The routes below are examples rather than fixed schedules. Your guide will adapt the experience to your interests, preferred pace and the places you have already visited.

Perhaps you want to experience Tokyo’s famous landmarks, explore its food and history, or discover neighbourhoods where everyday life takes centre stage. We will help you create a realistic itinerary that makes good use of your time without making the day feel rushed.

Tokyo Icons: Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Shibuya and Shinjuku

This private Tokyo itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors who want to experience the city’s famous contrasts—from peaceful shrine grounds to fashion districts, neon streets and intimate local alleys.

Your tour could begin at Meiji Shrine, where a wide path through a forested area creates a surprisingly peaceful introduction to central Tokyo. Your guide can explain the customs associated with visiting a Shinto shrine and share the history behind this important spiritual site.

From there, continue into Harajuku. Takeshita Street offers the colourful, energetic side of the neighbourhood, while the nearby backstreets reveal independent boutiques, vintage clothing shops and quieter cafés. Your guide can adapt this part of the tour depending on whether you are interested in fashion, pop culture, architecture or local food.

The experience can then continue towards Shibuya. Cross the famous Shibuya Crossing, explore the surrounding streets and learn how the district developed into one of Tokyo’s best-known commercial centres. If you would like a panoramic view, your guide can recommend a suitable observation point based on your schedule and preferences.

For a longer tour, finish in Shinjuku. Beyond the skyscrapers and large entertainment streets, the district contains small alleys, casual restaurants and longstanding drinking areas. It is a good place to see another side of Tokyo as the city changes from day to night.

This route is well suited to: first-time visitors, couples, families with older children, photographers and guests who want to see several of Tokyo’s most recognisable districts.

Possible highlights: Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Omotesando, Shibuya Crossing, Shinjuku and local food or drink stops.

Food and History: Tsukiji, Asakusa and Ueno

Choose this route if you are interested in Japanese food, traditional culture and the history of Tokyo. It combines lively markets, historic temples and neighbourhoods that still retain traces of the city’s older character.

Begin at Tsukiji Outer Market, where narrow streets are lined with seafood vendors, specialist shops and small food stalls. Depending on your tastes, you may have the opportunity to try sushi, tamagoyaki, seafood, tea or seasonal snacks. Your guide can help you understand what you are seeing, recommend appropriate places to eat and assist with ordering.

Food and drinks are not included in the tour price, allowing you to choose what and how much you would like to sample.

Continue to Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s best-known historic districts. Visit Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, and learn about the meaning of its gates, incense burner and main hall. Nakamise Street is famous for traditional snacks and souvenirs, but your guide can also introduce you to quieter side streets away from the busiest route.

Depending on your interests and available time, the tour can continue to Ueno. Ueno Park contains museums, temples, shrines and important cultural sites, while nearby Ameyoko offers a completely different atmosphere. This busy market street developed around the railway tracks and remains filled with food shops, clothing stores and vendors calling out to passing customers.

This itinerary provides an accessible introduction to Tokyo’s food culture and history without requiring guests to organize several unfamiliar districts independently.

This route is well suited to: food lovers, history enthusiasts, families and visitors looking for a balance of sightseeing and tasting opportunities.

Possible highlights: Tsukiji Outer Market, Senso-ji, Nakamise Street, Asakusa’s side streets, Ueno Park and Ameyoko Market.

Hidden Tokyo: Shimokitazawa, Koenji and Kichijoji

Tokyo is much more than its famous landmarks. This route is intended for returning visitors and curious travellers who want to explore creative neighbourhoods, independent businesses and places where local residents spend their free time.

Start in Shimokitazawa, a compact neighbourhood known for vintage clothing, record shops, cafés and small performance venues. Its pedestrian-friendly streets make it an enjoyable place to explore without a rigid checklist. Your guide can tailor the visit around fashion, music, coffee, photography or the area’s relaxed atmosphere.

Continue to Koenji, another neighbourhood with a strong connection to alternative music and second-hand fashion. Covered shopping streets, small bars and independent shops give the area a lived-in character that differs greatly from central Tokyo’s major commercial districts. Because many of its best places are easy to overlook, exploring with a local guide can make the experience much more rewarding.

A longer itinerary could also include Kichijoji. The neighbourhood combines the greenery of Inokashira Park with busy shopping streets, intimate restaurants and small alleys around the station. It is a pleasant place to slow down, take a walk and experience the rhythm of everyday Tokyo.

Visiting all three neighbourhoods may not be realistic within every tour length, so your guide will recommend the best combination based on your interests, starting point and preferred pace.

This route is well suited to: returning visitors, solo travellers, creative travellers and anyone who prefers neighbourhood exploration to conventional sightseeing.

Possible highlights: vintage shopping, independent cafés, record shops, local shopping streets, Inokashira Park and casual neighbourhood dining.

What Can You See During a 5-Hour Tokyo Tour?

Tokyo is enormous, so a good private tour is not about visiting as many places as possible. It is about selecting areas that work well together and leaving enough time to explore them properly.

During a five-hour tour, most guests can comfortably focus on two or three nearby areas. The exact number depends on your walking pace, transport time, food stops and how long you would like to spend at each location.

If you request districts that are far apart, your guide may suggest a more practical alternative. This helps you spend more time experiencing Tokyo and less time travelling between stations.

Seven- and eight-hour tours may be available on request for guests who want to explore more areas or enjoy a slower pace.
