Moving to Japan felt like stepping into one of my favourite anime series. And where else would a true otaku like me feel most at home than Akihabara? For anime and gaming fans, Akihabara is basically paradise.

Known as the “electric town” of Tokyo, it’s a neon-filled wonderland packed with everything an anime nerd could dream of—figure shops, gaming arcades, maid cafés, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered around every corner.

So, if you’ve ever wanted to live out your own otaku fantasy, come along as I take you through a day in Akihabara, exploring all the best spots, snagging exclusive merch, and nerding out to the max!

First Stop: Anime Shops Galore

Exploring Akihabara’s best shops was my top priority. This place isn’t just for grabbing the latest manga; it’s full of rare figures, merch, and collectibles you can’t find anywhere else.

Animate Akihabara

Animate is THE place to start if you’re an anime fan. Imagine floors filled with posters, figures, and exclusive merch from every series you can think of. Whether you’re a hardcore One Piece fan or just casually watching Demon Slayer, Animate has something for everyone. It’s easy to lose track of time in here, just going from one floor to the next, and maybe spending way too much money (speaking from experience!).

Mandarake Akihabara Complex

Mandarake is like the Holy Grail of otaku culture. This eight-storey shop is packed with super rare manga, vintage toys, and classic anime merch. Each floor has something different, so whether you’re looking for old-school Gundam or 90s Sailor Moon stuff, Mandarake has it. If you’re a collector, this place is pure gold.

Akihabara Radio Kaikan

One of the most iconic buildings in Akihabara, Radio Kaikan is packed with smaller shops selling everything from gacha (those fun capsule toys) to super-detailed anime figures. Every floor has something different, and some shops even let you customise your own gacha. I left with a few bags of little figures because, honestly, how can you say no to those?

Kotobukiya Akihabara Store

Kotobukiya has some of the best anime figures you’ll ever see. They’re known for insanely detailed models from popular series, and you’ll even find exclusive limited-edition figures. They’ve got a big Pokémon section too, so if you’re a Poké-fan, this place is a must. It’s hard not to geek out over the quality of their stuff!

Gaming Heaven: The Arcades of Akihabara

After snagging some merch, it was time to hit up Akihabara’s gaming zones. This is where gamers can really geek out, and trust me, it’s next-level awesome.

GiGO Akihabara

GiGO Akihabara is a multi-storey arcade with all sorts of games. You’ll find rhythm games (think Dance Dance Revolution), crane games, and even VR experiences. I spent way too long trying to win a giant plushie of my favourite character, and yeah, I probably spent way too much. But it’s all part of the Akihabara experience!

Taito Station

Taito Station is like a gaming maze where each floor offers something different. You’ll find shooting games, racing simulators, and classic arcade games here. It’s one of those places where you walk in and lose track of time. They even have exclusive prizes in their crane games, so of course, I had to try my hand at winning a few.

Super Potato

Super Potato is pure retro gaming heaven. If you’re a fan of old-school consoles like the NES, SNES, or even the Sega Genesis, this is the spot. They have a retro arcade on one of the floors, so you can play games straight from the 80s and 90s. I went a little crazy with nostalgia here, trying out games I hadn’t seen in years.

Only in Akihabara: Unique Otaku Experiences

The shopping and gaming were already epic, but Akihabara has way more than that. Here are some of the best quirky, one-of-a-kind experiences.

Maid Cafés

Visiting an Akihabara maid café was one of the top things on my list. In these cafés, the waitresses dress up as cute maids and make you feel like a VIP guest. The themes are different in each café, and the maids even do a little magic spell when serving food. It’s quirky, fun, and super entertaining. Going to a maid café might sound weird, but trust me, it’s a must-do when you’re exploring Akihabara!

Gachapon Hall

Gachapon Hall is basically a mini paradise for anyone who loves capsule toys. Rows and rows of gachapon machines filled with anime characters, miniatures, and random cute stuff you didn’t know you needed. Each turn is a surprise, and it’s easy to spend a small fortune here without even realising it. I walked out with a whole bag of mini figures!

Cosplay Studios

I never thought I’d actually cosplay in public, but Akihabara made it feel totally normal. Several studios here let you rent costumes and do photoshoots dressed as your favourite character. It’s so much fun, and everyone’s just there to enjoy themselves. Some places even offer makeup services, so you can go all-out and become your anime alter ego for a day!

Pro Tips for the Ultimate Akihabara Experience

  1. Go Early or Late: Akihabara can get super crowded, especially on weekends. Getting there early means you’ll have more time to explore without fighting through crowds.
  2. Cash is King: Lots of smaller shops and arcades are cash-only, so make sure you have some yen on hand.
  3. Spend the Whole Day: There’s so much to see and do, so don’t rush! Wear comfy shoes, stay hydrated, and pace yourself.
  4. Respect the Rules: Some stores and cafés don’t allow photos, so check for signs or ask staff before snapping pictures.
