What do our guests say

Tokyo’s craft beer scene has grown from a small movement into a major part of the city’s social life. While big commercial brands are still found in every convenience store, there is an increasing focus on independent breweries that prioritise unique flavours and traditional methods.

In the modern districts of Shibuya and Harajuku, the beer culture is fast and international. You’ll see bilingual menus and modern decor, with taprooms that feature dozens of different styles on draft, from heavy stouts to crisp pilsners. But in neighbourhoods like Shimokitazawa, the feel is much more creative and independent. Here, the bars are smaller and often tucked away in narrow side streets. The focus in these areas is on supporting small-scale domestic producers who experiment with different types of yeast and hops.

On the eastern side of the city, known as Shitamachi, you’ll find Asakusa, which has been a centre for drinking for over a hundred years, and it still has a traditional atmosphere. In this part of Tokyo, you will find “kobo” or beer workshops. This is also where you’ll find the famous Hoppy Street, where rows of outdoor stalls serve a retro malt drink that locals have enjoyed since the years following the second world war.
