1. Nikko – Temples and Waterfalls

To get here, take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya, then switch to the JR Nikko Line. Your first stop can be the famous Shinkyo Bridge, a bright red bridge that looks beautiful against the golden and red leaves. From there, it’s a relaxed walk to Rinnoji Temple and Futarasan Shrine, where the traditional buildings are framed by fall colours. After exploring, you can enjoy a nice lunch at a local soba restaurant. In the afternoon, take a bus to see the amazing Kegon Falls and the peaceful Chuzenji Lake, two of Nikko’s must-see autumn spots.

2. Mount Tsukuba – A Scenic Hike

Take the Tsukuba Express to Tsukuba Station. Your first stop is Tsukuba Shrine, located at the base of the mountain. From there, you can hop on the Tsukuba Cable Car for a scenic ride up through the trees. At the top, you can hike to the twin peaks of Nyotai and Nantai for wide-open views of the Kanto Plain. After your hike, you can relax at Tsukuba Onsen (hot springs) near the base of the mountain before heading back to Tokyo.

3. Nagatoro – A Riverside Retreat

Take the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and transfer to the Chichibu Railway to reach Nagatoro Station. Once you arrive, take a short walk to the famous Iwadatami Rocks along the Arakawa River. A very popular activity here is the Nagatoro Riverboat Cruise, a 20-minute ride that takes you through gorges with spectacular fall foliage. Afterwards, you can relax at a local Nagatoro Onsen to enjoy a warm soak with views of the colourful mountains.

4. Kawagoe – A Trip Back in Time

For a quick and easy getaway, take the Tobu Tojo Line to Kawagoe. Start on Kurazukuri Street, known for its old Edo-period buildings and beautiful golden ginkgo trees in autumn. Next, you can visit the lovely Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and the historic Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Goten. The castle gardens are especially beautiful during this season. 5. Mount Takao – Close to Tokyo

After your hike, unwind at Takaosan Onsen, a hot spring facility located right near the station.

Generally, the peak season for areas around Tokyo is from mid-November to early December. However, this can change each year depending on the weather. It’s a good idea to check a foliage forecast a few weeks before your trip.
