Begin with Elegance: Dressing in a Kimono

My journey started with a time-honoured transformation. Upon arrival at the Studio, I was fitted into a kimono, choosing from a variety of beautiful patterns that reflected my taste. With the staff’s expert assistance, I was dressed up swiftly, complete with an obi sash picked by me (you can pick yours to either contrast or complement your ensemble), and even got my hair done with lovely hair accessories to make sure I was looking perfect in the pictures.

Since I was about to experience one of Japan’s most famous traditions, it only made sense that I would first understand what Japanese people used to wear back in the days when the tea ceremony was born! I even got to wear kimono shoes, which made for a new experience of walking since these are slightly different from regular shoes.

But do not worry, even if you find the shoes weird at the start, you’ll find yourself walking with grace before long, dressed in the same style worn for centuries during formal gatherings.

A Sacred Space: Entering the Tatami Room

Donning my kimono, I was then introduced to the purification ritual, a simple but symbolic act that marks the entrance into the world of the tea ceremony. This area is small but perfectly decorated, and its peaceful layout makes for an ideal photo spot too!

Then, I stepped into the tatami-floored tearoom, a quiet and refined space that exudes calm through its minimalism, natural materials, and deliberate design. The view of the traditional garden was facing me, so I was able to feel the season from the comfort of the room, and so will you.

Whether seated on the floor or in a provided chair, you will be made to feel welcome, as all guests are equals in the tea room.

The Ceremony Begins: Silence, Precision, Presence

The tea master then entered the tea room and began the ceremony with slow, deliberate movements, each one filled with meaning and centuries of tradition. First, I merely observed as the utensils were cleaned, the matcha prepared, and the air began to fill with the subtle energy of focused hospitality.

This was not a performance, but a ritual that honoured me as the guest and invited me to become fully present in the moment. You will surely feel the same, especially as you’re welcomed to copy some of the moves, like the bows and the greetings that are usually offered in the tea ceremony.

Most of these moments are spent in quiet observation, bringing all the focus to the task at hand: the preparation of the tea. Here, you’ll learn about the cultural principles that underpin the ceremony: respect, tranquillity, purity, and harmony.

The atmosphere was still and meditative, with no rush or chatter, just a quiet unfolding of movement and meaning, and I loved every moment of it.

Whisk Your Own Bowl of Matcha

Once the tea has been prepared, you’ll have the opportunity to try it yourself. Under the careful guidance of the tea master, you’ll whisk your own bowl of matcha, learning how to create a frothy, balanced tea with just the right motion.

While simple in appearance, the whisking technique surprised me with its precision and its ability to engage both mind and body. This will be the only challenge you’ll face: to keep whisking despite your wrist feeling a bit tired, but as you see the foam form, it will be worth it.

To accompany the tea, I was served a traditional wagashi sweet, chosen to reflect the season with its shape and colour, showing respect and appreciation to the here and now, in a very subtle way. These confections are as beautiful as they are simple in flavour; after all, their main purpose is to balance the bitterness of the matcha, offering a final note of delight to the experience. With tea in hand, sweet on tongue, and stillness in the air, the ceremony came to a close, leaving me with a sense of deep appreciation for the quiet richness of Japanese culture.

Kimono and Tea Ceremony Experience FAQs

What are the most important aspects of the Tea Ceremony?

There are four elements of great importance in the Tea Ceremony: 和敬清寂 Wa, Kei, Sei, and Jyaku. These mean Harmony, Respect, Purity and Tranquillity and are part of what you’ll experience.

Are there age restrictions for participating in the ceremony?

No, everyone can enjoy a tea ceremony no matter their age, as long as they can be mindful and respect the etiquette and silence of the ceremony. However, keep in mind that matcha tea has caffeine, and it might not be suited for those sensitive to it.

Is seiza (sitting on top of your legs) that hard?

Seiza, the traditional and respectful way of sitting in tea ceremonies, is very challenging for those who have never tried it before. You can try to do seiza for a bit if you’d like, but most tea masters understand that it can be painful and will encourage you to sit comfortably.

Is the Kimono Comfortable to wear?

The Obi sash that goes around the belly can be a new experience, but it is not supposed to feel uncomfortable. Many people even say it helps them keep a good posture.

Is there a specific city to try the tea ceremony? While traditional cities boost the atmosphere of older arts like the tea ceremony, Japan has many great places to try these in more modern cities too. Check out our experiences and see in which cities they’re available!
