There is no doubt that there are many beautiful illuminations in Tokyo, but if you have time and are interested in checking some other exceptional and huge-scale illuminations outside of the city, here are 10 incredible illumination day trips from Tokyo for you to enjoy with your family, friends and loved ones. Some of these illuminations are the biggest there has ever been so make sure not to miss out this year.

Illuminations in Kanagawa

1. Yokohama Milight 2021

Date: November 11th- February 13th, 2021 

This is Yokohama’s largest illumination event that brightly colours the Minato Mirai area of ​​Yokohama in winter. The city of Minatomirai is surrounded by lights over a total length of about 1.5km from the east exit of Yokohama Station to Sakura Street through Grandmall Park. Approximately 500,000 LED lights in different colors such as blue, champagne gold, white, and warm white brightly color the city.

From 2021, the illuminations will be created with sustainability in mind with the electricity used during the period will be green power generated by natural energy such as solar power and wind power.

2. Anniversaire Minato Mirai Yokohama

Date: 16th November- February 14th, 2021 

Special illumination of Anniversaire Minato Mirai Yokohama will be set up this year, where the path of light lights up the road from the entrance to the venue. Located in the Minato Mirai area, it is said to be a sacred place for lovers, in a fantastic atmosphere. The cafe attached to the wedding hall offers a special menu just for Christmas.

A free chapel tour is also offered for couples so you can enjoy the gorgeous interior of Anniversaire Minato Mirai Yokohama.

3. Sea Paradise Night Aquarium

Date: Throughout the year, only on weekends and public holidays 

Sea Paradise is wrapped in a mysterious world of light with its illumination. This illumination can be enjoyed all year round. The illuminations feature the harmony between dolphins and humans, with different illuminations and dolphins shows throughout the day. 

Sea Paradise is separated into four areas categorised by colours, blue, red, green and yellow. For example, Blue World- Mysterious magical love, displays the magic of dolphins and humans working together, shown in a crystal temple full of pure love.

4. HIGASHI-TOTSUKA Music Light 2021-2022- 10man

Date: October 31st, 2021- February 14th, 2022 

Illuminations colour the JR East Totsuka Station West Exit Square, Morera Park, and East Exit Dew Bridge with about 100,000 LED bulbs. From 17:00 to 23:00, there are shows, with sound, light and video for about 15 minutes every hour, and you can enjoy entertainment where the illuminations change in time with the music. 

Under the slogan of “Illuminations created by everyone,” this illumination is created with local residents to install LED lights. Another highlight of this year is the WRGB pixel light installed on the stairs of Morera Park. 

5. Sagamiko Illumination

Date: November 13th, 2021- April 3rd, 2022 

Sagamiko is the biggest illumination in the Kanto region. The illumination covers a huge area, with a festival of lights that colour the forest of Lake Sagami, which can be reached in less than an hour from the city center. There is an incredible number and scale of illuminations here. 

In the huge garden of 40,000 square meters, the contrast between the light and darkness created by the quiet forest and the illumination of 6 million balls creates a fantastic space that cannot be experienced anywhere. 

In 2021, a new area is set up, in collaboration with the movie “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal”. With the colorful illuminations that spread all over the area, an Elysium with a height of about 4 meters and a huge silver crystal shines brightly. 

In the main area, Crystal Tokyo, a powerful illumination show will be held where the lights and the music are linked. One of the main highlights is the rainbow lift experience, where you can enjoy the rainbow-colored illuminations that spread under your feet for a total length of 250 meters. 

6. Matsuda Kirakira Festa

Date: November 20th- December 26th, 2021 

Mt. Matsuda is surrounded by dazzling light and invites you to the world of fairy tales during the Matsuda Kirakira Festa. Nishihirabatake Park is located on the summit of Mt. Matsuda, with the night view of the Ashigara Plain spreads out below you, so you can enjoy the illuminations and the night view at the same time. 

The colorful 180,000 balls of light that imitate the four seasons shine with the night view here. A wonderful spot where you can worship Mt. Fuji with the setting sun in the background even when the illuminations are on.

Illuminations in Chiba

7. Tokyo German Village Winter Illumination

Date: October 29th, 2021- March 21st, 2022 

This year, Tokyo German Village Winter Illuminations celebrates its 16th year, with 3 million light balls shining in this venue. The theme for 2021 is “sweets”. Go through the huge candy arch of 70 meters tall, you will enter this dreamlike candy country. All kinds of lit up lanterns are on display here, including a large pirate ship in 3D Illuminations. The light and music show is also on display here every 15 minutes. 

There is a special “Jura” area this year, where you can explore around the lit up dinosaur habitat with an electric cart. There are many different photo spots around German Village and you will be able to immerse yourself fully in this out-of-the-world atmosphere. 

8. Inzai Illuminations 2021

Date: November 13th, 2021- February 20th, 2021 

The light of champagne gold colors the area along the Hokuso Line

In Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, the illumination event Illumination ★ INZAI will be held for the 4th year. This year, the area will be newly expanded, where the north exit will be the city zone and the south exit will be the nature zone and the deck in front of the station will be the harmony zone between the city and nature. 

On the deck in front of the station right after exiting the ticket gate, the Inzai City mascot character Inzai-kun, which is about 3 meters high, is set up. There are about 500,000 light bulbs used here and it is the largest illumination in the area.

9. Ichihara Quad Forest Illumination

Date: November 19th- December 27th, 2021 

Expressing waterfalls and lakes with about 300,000 lights. Approximately 60 minutes from Tokyo, the annual illuminations will be held at the Ichihara Quad Forest, a natural park located in the central part of Chiba Prefecture. Illuminations are developed under the theme of “waterfalls and lakes”, using about 300,000 lights. Five waterfalls, large and small, are lit up here during the event.

Beyond the illuminated natural cave on the side of the lake, there is a light decoration that creates the atmosphere of Christmas.

Illumination in Saitama

10. Tobu Zoo Winter Illumination

Date: November 20th, 2021- February 13th, 2022 

Tobu Zoo will be holding a gorgeous illumination with about 3 million LEDs, along with the production of music and lights. Don’t miss the powerful illumination show and the collaboration spot with different artists. In the garden area, you can enjoy many different light effects like cherry blossom illuminations and lit-up flowers and animals.

In addition to the production of lights, the attractions in the area are all lit up. Enjoy the tunnel of light with a total length of about 50 m and the illuminated Ferris wheel.
