If you grew up in a country where trick-or-treating is the norm during Halloween, Tokyo is going to mess with your head a bit. No kids are wandering the streets after dark ringing doorbells here. Most families live stacked up in ten-to-twenty-floor apartment blocks, with security doors and intercoms standing between the street and anyone’s actual front door. Door-to-door was never going to fly for trick-or-treating in Tokyo.

That doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. Various areas across the city have cooked up their own versions of the tradition. They might not completely replace the trick-or-treating tradition you grew up with, but they will more than suffice for creating a fun Halloween memory for your kids.

Some neighbourhoods have shops sign up in advance through their local shotengai, the shopping street associations that run many of Tokyo’s older commercial strips, where kids walk between participating stores to collect sweets. Other events are run by shopping centres or large commercial complexes instead, built around stamp cards or parades. Either way, trick-or-treating in Tokyo usually involves an advance registration step, and treats are handed out by people who have signed up to participate.

Here are the trick-or-treat events I recommend for families visiting Tokyo this Halloween, with all the details you need to know for joining them in 2026.

Kichijoji Halloween Festa

Marking its 15th year, this Kichijoji tradition is easily one of the most established trick-or-treating events in Tokyo. Still, it has that nice neighbourhood feel, as it’s volunteer-run. The biggest draw is a huge community ‘candy walk’, where kids get a map of which local shops and businesses around Kichijoji station to visit so they can collect candy. There is also a red-carpet kids’ costume fashion show on the final day, plus photo spots set up around town.

For 2026, Kichijoji’s Halloween Festa will be from October 24 to 26, from 11am to 6pm.  It is open to kids aged 0 to 12 with a guardian in tow.  To join, you must buy a participation pass online via their official website ahead of time (ticket sales open in mid-September). Once you buy a route, organizers mail your physical stamp card and map straight to your house before the event. On the big day, you just show up with your mailed card and start walking your route immediately without waiting in any lines.

Futako-Tamagawa Halloween Party

If your kid’s still at the age where a long walking route ends in a meltdown, this is the one I’d recommend. Three venues run it together, Futako Tamagawa Rise Shopping Center, Rise Dogwood Plaza, and Tamagawa Takashimaya, all connected and a short walk from the station.

The 2026 dates are October 24 and 25, and there is no booking or fee to stress about ahead of time. You just rock up in costume and grab a stamp card before letting your kid set the pace wandering through the indoor plazas for the photo stamp rally. Beyond the stamp hunt, the venues host hands-on craft workshops, and a newly upgraded disco-themed stage for family dance time.

Shimokita Kids Halloween

Shimokitazawa has run its own kids’ trick-or-treat thing in recent years. Personally, I like going just because it also means I get to browse around the thrift shops in the area.

From 1pm to 4pm on October 25, there will be a neighborhood candy walk where costumed kids (capped at the first 1,500 participants) kick things off at the East Exit station square, visit participating local shops to say the magic words, and fill their bags.

Beyond the main candy walk, there is a separate smartphone-based puzzle rally running from October 26 through November 8 where kids track down scattered face parts across local shops to rescue a lost Jack-o’-lantern.

Registration is handled strictly in advance via LINE and costs ¥1,000 per child (accompanying adults are free). You buy your web ticket through their LINE system ahead of time, show your confirmation screen at the station reception on the day of the event to pick up your route map and start walking, and bring your own bag for the candy.

Harajuku and Omotesando Hallo-Halloween Pumpkin Parade

Organized by the local shopping street association, this event has been bringing out costumed children and families along a fully closed stretch of Omotesando avenue for years. The 2026 event is scheduled for October 25.

Kids march right down the middle of the avenue in the street parade, and an Okashi Rally map guides you to participating shops across Harajuku and Omotesando giving out sweets. Spots require advance tickets that cost ¥1,000 per child 12 and under (accompanying adults are free), and you need to keep an eye on their site as details drop since slots sell out fast. Without a ticket, you can still watch the costumed participants from the pavement, but the crowd can get quite dense, so be sure to keep an eye on your kids. If wrestling crowds or walking a multi-stop neighborhood route sounds exhausting, you can always swap the stroller for a themed Halloween afternoon tea in Tokyo instead.

Trick-or-Treating in Tokyo FAQs

Where to Go Trick-or-Treating in Tokyo This Halloween 2026

Does Japan actually have trick-or-treating?

Not the door-to-door version most Western visitors picture, but Tokyo neighbourhoods run organised candy rallies and costume parades. or the bigger picture, you can read our blog on how Japan celebrates Halloween.

Is Halloween in Tokyo safe for young children?

The events on this list are built specifically for families and run calmly.

Do I need to register in advance for Tokyo’s Halloween parades?

Yes, a lot of the trick-or-treat events in Tokyo require advance registration. And since there aren’t that many of these events available to begin with, registering as early as you can (often weeks ahead) is highly recommended.

What should kids wear trick-or-treating in Tokyo?

Honestly, a Don Quijote costume is more than fine. Comfy shoes matter more than the outfit, since most of these routes involve a fair amount of walking.
